Schools are closed on public holidays

All schools must remain closed on public holidays, Anniversary Day Holidays, Saturday and Sunday.

Section 65C of the Education Act 1989 states that every board shall ensure that all schools it administers are closed on Saturdays, Sundays, the relevant Anniversary Day Holiday, and on the following days:

  • New Year’s Day
  • 2 January
  • Waitangi Day (in 2016 this is observed on Monday 8 February)
  • Good Friday
  • Easter Monday
  • Tuesday after Easter Monday
  • ANZAC Day
  • the Sovereign’s Birthday
  • Labour Day
  • Christmas Day
  • Boxing Day
  • and the day observed in the locality in which the school is situated as anniversary day.
